ROBERTO FONSECA
„La Gran Diversión“
Roberto Fonseca - piano keys & vocal
Felipe Cabrera - double bass
Kay Jalo - drums
The now 49-year-old Cuban pianist and singer Roberto Fonseca was a child prodigy with incredible musicality. As a child, he was completely committed to the pure jazz tradition, but it was through the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club that he became acquainted with his own musical tradition. As a 15-year-old, he accompanied the old heroes of Cuban music such as Omara Portuondo, Guajiro Mirabal and Cachaito Lopez. Later, the Grammy nominee played with American jazz stars such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker. Today, with his Afro-Cuban music, which is always convincingly expansive in all directions, always breathtakingly percussive and always compositionally original, and as the inspirer and director of the Havana Jazz Festival, his contribution to the development of Cuban music can hardly be overestimated. His current program "La Gran Diversión" is a modern homage to the golden era of Cuban music in the 1930s, when it first spilled over into Europe.
