The 36-year-old Christie Dashiell has made a long but successful attempt to follow in the footsteps of the great American jazz singers from Sarah Vaughan to Dee Dee Bridgewater and vie for the crown with Samara Joy and Cécile McLorin Salvant. As the daughter of a bassist and a gospel singer, she already performed in the family ensemble as a child. She graduated from the Manhattan School of Music with several student music awards from Downbeat magazine. Her debut album “Time All Mine” was voted “Album of the Year” by several magazines in 2016. However, she still wanted to learn from greats such as Geri Allen, Esperanza Spalding, Teri Lynn Carrington, Marquis Hill, Marcus Strickland and Immanuel Wilkins, was in the band of star vibraphonist Stefon Harris for a long time and is currently part of the Black Lives collective. Experience that has paid off: Her second album “Journey in Black”, carried by her mature and unmistakable voice, which is as powerful as it is variable, was nominated for a Grammy, she was ennobled by Downbeat as “one of the most innovative singers and composers of these days”, received the “Next Jazz Legacy” award and is now being courted by the most important festivals. Now she is coming to Jazz Sommer with her excellent band.
