Dee Dee Bridgewater is the reigning queen of classic American jazz singing - a fearless pioneer, guardian of tradition and bridge-builder between genres. She earned her first spurs as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band. In the seventies, she performed with Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. Since the nineties, she has been the star that others play with, producing her own albums and founding her own label in 2006. Parallel to her jazz career, which was crowned with three Grammys, she also gained a foothold in musical theater. As early as 1975, she won a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in “The Wiz”. She was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for her recently reprised role as Billie Holiday in “Lady Day”. Dee Dee Bridgewater is not only an NEA Jazz Master, ASCAP Champion, Doris Duke Artist and in the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, she is also socially committed as a UN ambassador and co-founder of The Woodshed Network.
This is also reflected in the new program that Dee Dee is presenting at Jazz Sommer im Bayerischen Hof. “WE EXIST!” is a battle cry.
A reflection on a journey that is still underway. With protest songs such as “Mississippi Goddam”, “Trying Times” and “The Danger Zone”, the Dee Dee Bridgewater Quartet connects past and present and shows how far we have come and how far we still have to go. And they do so from the perspective of strong women: Dee Dee Bridgewater's incomparable voice and interpretative acumen are accompanied by outstanding talent. From pianist and musical director Carmen Staaf, a current “rising star” in the DownBeat critics' polls. Italian composer and percussionist Rosa Brunello on bass and Berklee professor Shirazette Tinnin on drums.
