Internationally renowned double bassist and composer Dieter Ilg has an impressive track record. He has released 25 award-winning albums of his own and has also made a number of outstanding recordings as a sideman. Stars such as Randy Brecker, Albert Mangelsdorff, Nguyên Lê, Charlie Mariano, and, for many years now, Till Brönner have placed their trust in his virtuoso, creative playing, which is always at the service of the music. Ilg's new album “Motherland” reunites his all-star trio with Rainer Böhm on piano and Patrice Héral on drums for their once groundbreaking fusion of European classical music and American jazz, which is still rarely heard today in such a harmonious and coherent form. For the first time, however, the template is not a classical composer, but rather a “theme” with a colorful mix of favorite songs, original compositions, pop songs from the 60s and 70s, and personal reminiscences. Naturally seasoned with “a dose of humor, stubbornness, wildness, solid grounding, and unyielding, immeasurable affection,” as Ilg jokingly explains: “‘Motherland’ is thematically dedicated to my origins, my heritage and tradition, the protection of Mother Earth, and feeling at home.”
