Traditionally, the second prizewinners of the biennial Kurt Maas Jazz Awards are invited to kick off the Jazz Summer on the evening before the opening. This year we welcome the highly talented female saxophonist Katharina Pfeifer. In the trio Cnidaria with her older brother Sebastian on the keys - who is already firmly anchored in the local scene as a pianist, composer and producer - and Ilja Tarnopolskij on drums, she subtly combines contemporary jazz with influences from modern improvisation and sound art. The band's name Cnidaria is borrowed from the Latin word for cnidarians, because of their bipolarity: sometimes gentle and flowing, sometimes energetic and surprising. Katharina Pfeifer and her trio create a varied, authentic, avant-garde-inspired sound full of spontaneous interaction and unpredictable twists and turns. A musical atmosphere that inspires reflection and leaves room for discovery.
