The 2026 Jazz Summer comes to a close with two of Norway’s most prominent representatives of the “Nordic sound.” Although both are nearly the same age, both from Oslo, and both trained in Trondheim, pianist Tord Gustavsen and saxophonist Trygve Seim are now performing together as a duo for the first time. Gustavsen is one of those jazz pianists with an unmistakably unique style, grounded in an exceptional touch. He first gained international recognition as an accompanist to singer Silje Nergaard. Since his ECM debut, “Changing Places,” in 2003, however, he has focused entirely on his own music and his trio. There is always something religious about his compositions. “Small hymns” are his pieces, he once said himself. Trygve Seim is almost a parallel on the saxophone. He decided to become a saxophonist after hearing Jan Garbarek’s CD “Eventyr” in 1985. Through his collaborations with Jon Balke, Jacob Young, Iro Haarla, Frode Haltli, and the quartet “The Source” as well as his own recordings, he has become the benchmark for an elegiac “Nordic” saxophone sound that bridges classical and jazz. Gustavsen and Seim with their “Inner Chorals” - the perfect finale for a festival that explores the healing power of music.
