After Abdullah Ibrahim’s performance at the opening concert of Jazz Summer 2026 had to be canceled last week, we have now received the shocking news of his passing. The program booklets, already printed with his name, remind us of the legacy of the South African jazz legend and anti-apartheid icon, whose universal musical manifesto of humanity fits so well with the motto of this year’s Jazz Summer.
Another great musical bridge-builder between cultures will now headline the Jazz Summer at the Bayerischer Hof 2026 with his trio: Alfredo Rodriguez. As the youngest to date, he continues the long tradition of Cuban jazz piano stars such as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ramon Valle, and Roberto Fonseca. Like his predecessors, he too had to leave his homeland to pursue an international career. Rodriguez was discovered by none other than Quincy Jones and, with his help, came to the U.S. at the age of 24. He became one of the most popular jazz musicians on social media primarily due to his ability—driven by outstanding technique and overwhelming musicality—to transform nearly any song, from Beethoven to the Beatles and from “Guantanamera” to “Giant Steps,” into his own brilliant Latin jazz. His concerts are as entertaining as they are deeply emotional.
With this power to connect cultures and people, he, too, fits perfectly with the motto of Jazz Summer 2026: “What The World Needs Now.”
