The idea came in 2009 from Katarina Ehmki, then director of Jazz Sommer, together with bassist Wolfgang Schmid: What if the music critics played themselves for once, and the musicians wrote the reviews? No sooner said than done, and because everyone involved had a blast, the Munich Music Critics’ Band - also known as the Munich Music Critics’ Jazz Orchestra - kicked off the Jazz Summer for ten years. Because the respectful and humble encounter between artists, critics, and the audience is more important now than ever, the Bayerischer Hof is reviving this tradition, which is likely unique worldwide. So renowned Munich journalists are once again taking up their instruments in the Olympic spirit: being there is everything. Master pianist Matthias Bublath provides the musical cohesion on electric bass, before he shows with his own trio in the second set how it’s really done.
